"Ernie" was a member of our department in 2004 when the Nobel Prize in Chemisty was announced for his discoveries on protein degradation and the role of ubiquitination.
He was an energetic and enthusiastic researcher in our department, whose late interests ranged from fundamentals of fumarase enzyme kinetics to brain metabolism.
He wielded his cane as a pointer during one memorable presentation at a department retreat. The department sponsored a symposium in his honor after the prize was awarded.
He will be remembered for his approach to science and to living. The links below have photos of Ernie in Stockholm and outside Irvine Hall.
